grateful for books
Which I know is super cliché, but I don't care.
I was that kid who used to read an entire Goosebumps in one sitting. I rode my bike or walked to the library almost every day during the summer. I learned how to walk and read at the same time so I didn't have a moment when my nose wasn't in a particular book that I was excited to indulge in. Needless to say, I was a huge book nerd.
This is not to say that I was well-read. On the contrary, I read whatever garbage looked most interesting to me at the time; mostly fantasy or romance or young adult puberty themed ones. I'm actually really far behind in being familiar with actual, quality literature and so have been trying to play catch up for the last couple years. It's rather exhausting.
But man, there is nothing like a good book! It's just so personal. Everything that you see is your interpretation of what they've put on the page. The inflection that the characters speak with, the texture of their homes, the energy of a relationship. I mean sure, the author gives you what they have to offer, but there is still so much room for their world to become something of your own making. This is going to sound ridiculous but losing that time I get to spend in a fictional world is in the top half of the lengthy list of reasons why I haven't had kids yet and probably won't in the foreseeable future. It is that important to me.
But the funny thing is that I forget about it sometimes. It's so easy to mess around on my phone, or meet up with friends, or fall into a Youtube vortex that I sometimes forget what a transformational experience it can be to just sit down and look at some words on a page. I've gone months without even cracking a book open and all to my own personal and emotional detriment.
Well at least for now I've got school to set deadlines for me to make sure I pick up a book or two every quarter. Plus, I've invested in a GoodReads account which is a fantastic website where you can track what you've been reading, what you want to read, and write nasty reviews about the newest Stephanie Meyer book that should have been transferred directly off the press and into the garbage can instead of ever having passed in front of my eyes.
So anyway, I like books and I'm grateful for them, and if you want to get rid of some books that you don't want anymore you should give them to me! Because I'll probably put them on my shelf and pretend like I'm ever going to read them but we both know that's never going to happen because I will probably just end up reading something else instead like usual.
Okay thank you for sticking with me for my 3 day catch up blogging sesh!

I love reading to my kids and can't wait to bring thrm into the pages of my favorite books and then see where their reading adventures take them. Just saying my favorite things about books is sharing (especially with you).
ReplyDeleteI wanted to write about the hours and hours we used to spend reading to each other in tents in the living room while we made silly little craft projects but ran out of steam. You are my favorite read aloud partner ever :)
