ice cream social as work
Sometimes, I love my job.
By some stroke of luck, I manage to be on the Party Planning Committee for my department. And by "stroke of luck" I mean I just sort of joined it because I could and I helped to transform it into the monster it is today. For example, about an hour and a half of my day today involved collecting, setting up and eating copious amounts of ice cream and toppings. There was also the obligatory hosting of the event and chatting and blah blah whatever the point is I had an ass load of ice cream instead of eating lunch and I do not regret it for a second. Calories be damned, my mouth and brain are very happy.
This became a bit of an issue later when I was performing in a community center full of catering dishes over those little heated burner things without an ounce of airflow. My crash from the sugar rush, plus dehydration, lack of actual food, and the smell of all those warm bodies in a confined space almost did me in. Fortunately, Tony came to the rescue with a six pack that we cracked open in the parking lot under the shady trees until they called us up for our set. Bullshitting with those dudes out back almost made the two hours of driving and two hours of sitting around worth the 30-minute set. Who am I kidding, it was worth it anyway. It was a gorgeous afternoon and that was a lovely way to spend it.
The man who we performing for was also great. He's got a degenerative disease that has put him in a wheelchair with quadriplegia, however, he's got his own outreach program for other people with disabilities and was raising money for a van so that he could drive around and further his mission. I hope he makes it. It might have been a dick move but me and the guys hung out in the back parking lot rather than stay and watch the presentation. The stuff he was showing was really heavy and I don't think any of us wanted to carry that around for the evening or the whole week. So hung out and laughed and hopefully brought that cheer back inside with us when they called us back in.
He was sweet, he told me I should audition for "The Voice". I told him that was absolutely never going to happen but that he was kind to say so. Really sweet dude, I hope I get to see him again. He's friends with one of the guys in the band. I'll post his go fund me page if I can find it.
Made it home just in time to turn in a proposal for a persuasive research paper. It was crap but what does he expect when he makes his due date on a Friday night? So anyway sorry this post is a bit meandering and doesn't really have a point to it. I just wanted to put down a little bit of my day in case that brings joy to anyone who wants to read it. Tomorrow's post is going to be about my first ever doggy birthday party. Stay tuned!
